Hello,
I was just wondering if some of you maybe knew how to convert Tactical Ops (TO) maps to full UT99 DM maps.
TO was born as UT99 mod in 1999 but some years later it went retail. TO uses Unreal Engine 1.x (including all Unreal formats) and also Unreal Editor 2.0 to build its own maps.
Some days ago I downloaded the retail version and I noticed many nice maps which could be used in sniper mod. Only a few docs about mapping for TO are available, they aren't clear and talk only about UEd 2.0.
I can only guess that, if the overall geometry of a map can be used in both TO and UT99, some TO-specific game "actors" must exist in order to trasform the map into a TO-like playground...the problem is I really don't know which they are !
...some of you maybe knows what I should delete or even modify in a TO map to transform it into a full UT99 DM map ?
thanks in advance,
Pietro

Sorry I have not done anything with TO before. Maybe someone else here has. I will let you know if I run across anything. |

Thanks.
At the present time, I've just found 2 interesting conversions from TO:
DM-[DoC]WinterRansom
http://www.unreal...mp;id=5190
DM-LastVoyage
http://www.gamefr...voyage_zip
Take a look at those maps !

You can't actually convert the maps; what you're likely finding are just maps that people put some time into to make look pretty and right. |

Hello Sig,
I have not understood well...what do you mean precisely ?
this would not be a "true conversion" between different map formats because both UT99 and TO use the same map format (.unr) and map editor (UEd 2.0 taken from UT99 v436)...do you maybe mean that, once you have built the map and converted it to TO-mod, TO-specific actors (like weapons for example) cannot be removed from it ?
I know for sure that some people worked on it in the past with success but I still have not all the technical details...are there any drawbacks about this kind of mapping ?
regards,
Pietro |

You can convert them. You have to remove all of the script actors responsible. You have to redo all of the textures because the TO maps are all built from TO default files. If you export all of those textures and create a new texture file, you can then save the map as a .unr. You add spawn points and weapons and the like. The only problem is that it takes FOREVER. I converted the CTF-Face to TO and it was a pain!

Thanks for the info...mmm...but do you mean converting TO to DM or DM to TO ?
Is it really necessary to redo all the textures if you to convert a TO map to DM ? the map DM-LastVoyage, posted above, has been published along with the same TO-xxx.utx packages used in the original TO map...I can't believe I must redo all the textures, it's a real suicide !

It goes both ways. You can go TO to DM or DM to TO. It really is the same amount of effort no matter which direction you're going. The reason why I say to export all the textures, create a new Textures package, and reapply the textures is because of the potential downloads required if you don't. If I hadn't done this with that Face map, it would have been close to 20 downloads on files the player probably never would have had to use again. You can try without it but there is a risk some people with slower connections never making it in. Have a good one.

Ok, it's about download and not about technical issues
Yes, texture repackaging is a smart choice but also a time-consuming one. As a whole, this looks like a personal choice of people managing their own server.
thanks,
